Introduction
Let me show you five plus one settings that you have to change if you play Dota 2 for the very first time. You can pause the video right here if you just want to copy-paste the settings or check them by yourself. For the rest of you, let’s begin!
1. Select Hero with Space and Camera Follow
Number one is how we can select our hero with space and have the camera follow us, like in League of Legends. To do so, we simply set our Select Hero key bind into space, then click on Advanced options, and we check the Hold Select Hero to Follow checkbox.
2. Quick Attack Move and Last Hit
Number two: Quick Attack Move and Last Hit. If you are new and you are coming from another MOBA, you probably won’t realize at once how important this option is. But in reality, this is the only way to farm and deny creeps. For now, just set those options as I show you, and I will explain how it works in a moment.
Okay, so right now, if we hold down right-click, it will rapidly apply it. This allows us to rapidly cancel our auto-attack by tapping S, which is by default key bind to stop all our actions. This is the way to perfectly time your last hit. Given how hard this game’s last hit looks like to new players, this is a must-have option. You can also now deny creeps the same way. CA of the Right-Click Allies to Deny option we checked earlier. We also set the Force Attack Move on A, and adjust it so our hero will attack the closest enemy to our mouse.
3. Quick Buy and Courier Mechanics
Number three: Quick Buy and Courier Mechanics. This is something that troubles a lot of new players, but with this option, it gets a lot easier. We adjust the hotkeys in a sequence that is very easy to follow. We set Grave to open the shop, F1 to buy from our Quick Buy list, F2 to command our courier to deliver the items, and F3 to select the courier.
So now, the sequence we follow is this: We set an item on our Quick Buy list by pressing Shift + Click. Then, for example, while we are in lane and we have just enough money to buy our first piece, all we do is press F1 to buy it, and F2 to command our courier to fetch it. If we want to send our courier to the secret shop, we simply press F3 to select our courier, then W to send it to the secret shop, and Space to go back to our character. Once our courier arrives at the secret shop, we now press F1 to buy the item or just click it, and then F2 to fetch it.
Of course, you can set the key binds any way you like.
4. Mini Map Adjustments
Next, the options for our mini-map. The default mini-map is terrible, and I strongly suggest you copy this one. What we did is swap the enemy and ally hero’s arrows with hero portraits. We made those portraits size-adjusted if two units are too close to each other, and we made the map look realistic, which I believe will help you understand how the map looks like.
5. Self-Casting Items
Our last tip is only if you want to self-cast your items by double pressing the key bind. If Alt plus the item key bind works for you, ignore the step. Also, many players like to change the Alt modifier and set it on their mouse button. To do that, go to Hotkeys > Advanced Hotkeys, and set a new Alt modifier for double-tap self-cast. You need to check the Double-tap ability to self-cast option, and then click on this icon and set every item you want to use it for on Quick Cast.
Bonus Tip: Additional Settings
+1 Tip: Some small settings you might want to check: We changed the scoreboard key bind to Tab, like in League of Legends or any other game. We set a key bind to Select All Other Units in the Advanced Keybind menu to select all our summoned units, but not our hero. Unified Orders with Control will command every unit we have under our control to execute our action. And lastly, Center Camera on Respawn: We mostly don’t like this option because we want to teleport instantly to where we look after respawn.
Conclusion
And that’s pretty much everything a beginner has to know. Thank you for watching, and see you on the next video!
