Odin Beginner’s Build Order Guide – Age of Mythology: Retold
Hello everyone! We’re back with another beginner’s guide—this time featuring the easiest possible Odin build order for Age of Mythology: Retold.
Odin is often considered one of the harder gods to play, mainly because he requires early micromanagement of small attacks. You can’t simply sit back and boom your economy—you need to be active from the very start.
In this guide, we’ll go through a simple build order that helps you advance to the Classical Age as fast as possible, while also setting up your economy and military for early aggression.
Opening Moves
At the start of the game, follow this sequence:
Set your Town Center to auto-queue Dwarves, then switch to Villagers.
Send all three starting Villagers to build a new Ox Cart near the hunt.
Move your existing Ox Cart over to the gold mine.
The first Dwarf goes to gold.
The next Villager goes to food.
Use your starting Berserker to build a house, then send him scouting for gold mines and sheep.
The next Villager goes to wood. If possible, place him near the gold mine to share the Ox Cart—otherwise, use a tree near your Town Center.
The next Dwarf goes to gold. At this point, stop the auto-queue for Dwarves (important—we need gold for the Temple!).
Now, train:
3 Villagers to hunt → by the time the last of these is out, you should have enough to build your Temple.
2 more Villagers to wood → bringing you to 4 total on wood.
If your timings are clean, you’ll be able to click up to the Classical Age right after that.
Advancing to Classical
While aging up:
Train 1 Hersir.
Build a House (to avoid population problems).
Optionally, add 1 more Dwarf and rally your Town Center to gold.
Once you hit Classical:
Build a Great Hall.
Start producing Raiding Cavalry.
Choosing Your God
Most of the time, you’ll want to pick Freyja. She gives you Valkyries, which pair incredibly well with Raiding Cavalry. Together, they can:
Harass enemy Villagers efficiently.
Outrun most early enemy units.
Mid-Game Adjustments
From here, keep producing Raiding Cavalry and stay aggressive. If your opponent starts massing infantry—especially anti-cavalry—it’s a good idea to:
Build a Longhouse.
Train Throwing Axemen to balance your army.
After that, it really comes down to your preferred playstyle—whether you want to keep pressuring, boom your economy, or push for a stronger mid-game force.
